A list of Tree Diseases and their Symptoms

Tree diseases are just as common to the list of problems that affect trees. Some of these can be directly noticed by little symptoms, while others will become very severe before you even realize they are there. By doing a bit of research on diseases and their symptoms, you should be able to prevent an outbreak in your yard or neighborhood or control tree diseases.

This list includes some of the most common tree diseases and their symptoms:

Anthracnose is a fungal disease that affects newly formed leaves. These leaves may show brown spots with purple lesions underneath, followed by leaf drops. Cedar-apple rust starts out small but spreads quickly, infecting both apple and cedar trees by making galls on them. The spores enter the tiny nooks found inside the leaf. The list of symptoms includes tiny orange spores on the undersides of leaves, galls with oozing sap, and lesions found on the fruit. Cedar-quince rust starts out appearing as small white pustules on infected plant parts. As they form, these will begin to produce yellowish spores, which are actually fungal growths that are deposited onto healthy plants by rain or wind. Affected trees may also exhibit distorted growth and sparse foliage.

Verticillium wilt symptoms include wilting and drooping foliage, often seen on just one side of a tree first before progressing up the stem at an angle toward the top of the tree. An early sign is usually water soaking along the entire root zone line but extending no more than 1 inch down the stem.

Oak wilt symptoms include wilting trees that typically recover during the night or on cloudy days. There is yellowing in leaves, often starting at the top and progressing downward to the rest of the tree. The list also includes dark streaking under bark at branch crotches (water-soaked streaks), which are always associated with a large number of beetle tunnels through soft tissue under bark; extreme thinning or dieback, increasing over time; lesions found under bark, usually reddish-brown in color; and finally, interveinal chlorosis followed by rapid death by late summer to early fall.

Cottony Cushion Scale symptoms include dead twigs and limbs where eggs have been laid inside the tree. Twig dieback is common with this disease, as are listless foliage and sticky honeydew on leaves below affected areas. These list symptoms are commonly seen in the list of tree diseases.

The list symptoms include thinning in a chronically stressed tree, a fungus commonly seen in areas with high humidity or poor airflow. Look for listless leaves which curl downward and begin falling off the tree. Browning can be found in places where there once was healthy green foliage going up the list of tree diseases.
