How to Treat your Trees in the Rainy Season

Trees are known to be good for our environment, but they can also be beneficial in other ways therefore it is important to take care of your trees. Here are 10 things you can do to treat your trees during this time of year.

1. When it rains heavily, always make sure that water is draining properly from your lawn and around the tree's roots.

2. Avoid pruning a tree when it is wet because pruning wounds open up when exposed to water, thus exposing the tree to infection by fungi and bacteria. The same holds true for removing fallen leaves or pulling weeds around trees waiting until it's dry will save you a load of trouble later on!

3. Never fertilize a tree while it is raining because fertilizer granules may stick to the leaves and block the pores.

4. Place a thick layer of mulch(about an inch deep) around the tree's roots to avoid compaction and waterlogging during heavy rainfalls.

5. A tree that has been recently transplanted is more vulnerable to physical damage brought by rainfall, so it would be best to prune all leaves after transplanting until the new roots have developed enough strength to support them.

6. If you're going away for a few days, make sure that the lawn sprinkler system is set up so your tree won't suffer from too much dryness or too much wetness!

7. Leaking gutters are another thing you need to look out for because they will create soggy conditions in the soil.

8. If you notice that the leaves are beginning to curl, chances are they're suffering from too much salt build-up in the soil due to de-icing salt or fertilizer. You can carry out a simple leaf analysis by putting them in a glass of water and see if there's any change after 24 hours; if they sink, this means your tree is suffering from lack of oxygen (root rot). To fix this, simply cut back on watering/fertilizing and replace mulch instead.

9. Please be very careful when using lawn sprinklers because the pressure might damage bark tissue and cause bark splitting - especially during February to April when trees are still recovering from winter!

10. Take care of your tree and be good to the environment! Trees can reduce pollution, provide shade and prevent soil erosion. Indirectly, trees also help us breathe better by producing oxygen so the next time you're about to cut them down without thinking twice, think again.
